Design 1: “In the Red”

DESIGN 1_ _IN THE RED_c.png
  • Focus on debt as an institutional problem.

  • Tinos typeface chosen due to closeness to Times New Roman and its association with academia.

  • Red color for headline/information, accents, pullout quotes to match design concept.

Design 2: “Money Money”

DESIGN 2_ _MONEY MONEY_c2.png
  • Focus on debt as a personal burden.

  • As the author decided to note the personal debt burdens of the individuals interviewed/cited in this piece, I changed the font of the individual’s name and the amount of student debt they have to create a visual difference for a reader to more quickly pick it out from the overall text; I changed the color of text only for the monetary amount of debt for this same reason, and to focus on the debt of the individual.

  • Again, Tinos typeface chosen due to closeness to Times New Roman and its association with academia.

  • Tilt Prism typeface chosen for headline due to visual similarities to architectural layouts/plans.

  • Syne Mono typeface chosen for subheader + some body text due to similarity to “warning” advertisements (i.e. piracy advertisements) - which put the focus on the individual committing piracy rather than focusing on economic systems that enable/require individual consumers to think about themselves before companies.

  • Green color for headline/information, accents to match design concept.

This exercise was completed for Design and the Future of Publishing, a Fall 2024 course at The New School.
